Yoga and meditation retreat in Sumba: slow down by the sea
If you are looking for a yoga retreat in Sumba, Indonesia, Eco Beach City organises a Yoga & Meditation Retreat on its 2 km of private beach on the island, along with a Pilates & Mobility Retreat for people who prefer a more body-focused practice. Sumba is about an hour's flight from Bali and much quieter. Dates are published as each experience is confirmed, so there is no fixed date yet.
This article covers what the retreat is about, why Sumba suits it, what is on site today and how community members take part.
Why a retreat in Sumba
Bali is a well-known place for yoga, and it is also a busy island. Sumba sits east of Bali in East Nusa Tenggara and feels very different. It is warm all year and has far fewer buildings than Bali. CNN Travel named it one of the best places to visit in 2024.
For a retreat built around slowing down, that difference matters. Fewer distractions make it easier to keep a routine, sleep well and actually rest.
What the Yoga & Meditation Retreat is
The Yoga & Meditation Retreat is one of 26 themed experiences Eco Beach City organises on Sumba. As the name says, it is built around two practices: yoga for the body and meditation for the mind, by the sea.
We are not publishing teachers' names, daily schedules or prices in this article. Those are confirmed together with the dates, and they will appear on the experience page. We would rather leave a gap than fill it with guesses.

Who it suits
- People who already practise and want a few days to go deeper.
- People who are new to meditation and want a calm place to start.
- Remote workers who want a reset without stopping work completely, thanks to the coworking on site.
- Couples or friends looking for a quieter kind of trip.
Pilates and mobility as an alternative
Not everyone wants to sit in meditation. The Pilates & Mobility Retreat centres, as the name suggests, on pilates and mobility work. It can suit people who spend long hours at a desk, or who want to combine the retreat with other activities on the island.
For couples, there is also a Couples Retreat, and the full list of 26 experiences is on the experiences page.
What is on site today
Eco Beach City sits inside a private seafront residence with 2 km of beach. Today, these parts are built and open:
- 24 homes, where guests already stay.
- A beachfront coworking with Starlink internet, for anyone who needs to check in with work.
- Padel and tennis courts.
You can explore the site online before deciding with LiveIt, a 3D video game of the town.
Beyond the mat
Sumba gives a retreat a lot to do in the quiet hours. The coastline has hidden coves, natural lagoons and waterfalls inland. The island also has a strong culture of its own: the Marapu belief, ikat weaving, megalithic tombs and traditional villages. Around February or March, West Sumba usually hosts Pasola, a ritual horseback jousting festival.

Getting there
There are daily flights from Bali (Denpasar, DPS) to Tambolaka airport (TMC) in West Sumba. The flight takes about one hour, with morning departures around 9:00. Sumba also has Waingapu airport (WGP) in the east. The how to get here page has the practical details.
How to take part: the community membership
Community members can take part in the experiences. The membership works like this:
- Price: €1,500, or 10 payments of €150 interest free. You start with €150.
- Two member cards are included.
- Stays: 1 to 6 weeks every year. One week is guaranteed, and more when there is space.

If yoga and meditation are your focus, that means one retreat a year to look forward to, and time by the sea to keep the habit going.
An honest note on dates
