Tennis in Sumba: a tennis week by the sea, one hour from Bali

Most tennis trips go to the same places: big resorts, busy clubs and courts booked by the hour. Sumba is a different idea. It is an island in eastern Indonesia, about one hour by plane from Bali, with long empty beaches, a strong living culture and far fewer people than Bali. At Eco Beach City, a community by the sea on Sumba, the tennis courts are already built and open.

This guide covers what a tennis week in Sumba looks like, when to go, playing in the heat, what to pack and the Head of Tennis program. Where something is not confirmed yet, we say so.

Why play tennis in Sumba

Tennis is a sport you can take almost anywhere, but the setting changes how it feels. In Sumba you play in warm weather all year, with the sea close by and time to rest between sessions. There are no crowds waiting for your court and no rush to leave it.

It also suits people who want more than tennis from a trip. Between sessions you can swim, read, work at the beachfront coworking or explore an island that still feels open and quiet.

What is already built at Eco Beach City

Eco Beach City sits inside a private seafront residence with 2 km of beach. What is already built:

That matters for a tennis trip. You are not booking a plan or a render: the courts exist, and you can play on them. If someone in your group prefers padel, the padel court is on the same site, so you can try both sports in the same week.

The Tennis Camp & Tournament

The Tennis Camp & Tournament is one of 26 experiences the community organises in Sumba. The format is simple: lessons by level, then singles and doubles matches.

We do not publish coach names, session plans or a calendar here, because those are confirmed together with each date. Dates are published as each experience is confirmed, on the experience page. It is not a weekly event, and we would rather wait than guess.

If you also enjoy padel, the Padel Camp & Tournament follows the same idea: training first, then a tournament. You can read more in our post on the padel camp in Sumba.

When to go

Sumba is warm all year and has two broad seasons:

For a tennis week, the dry months are usually the safest choice. The rains can start earlier in some years, so treat these months as a guide and check a forecast before you book.

Playing in the heat

Tennis in the tropics asks a bit more of your body. Heat and humidity raise your heart rate for the same effort and increase how much you sweat. A few habits help:

For a fuller list on heat, hydration and recovery, the free guide Sumba for athletes covers seasons, travel and packing in one place.

What to pack

Sumba has far fewer shops than Bali, and tennis gear can be hard to find. Bring what you depend on:

Check your airline's baggage rules for racket bags before you fly, and bring some cash in rupiah, as small shops may not take cards.

Getting there

There are daily flights from Bali (Denpasar, DPS) to Tambolaka (TMC) in West Sumba, and the flight takes about one hour. Sumba also has Waingapu airport (WGP) in the east. Most international travellers connect through Bali. Our how to get here page has the practical details.

Off the court

A tennis week leaves time for the island. Many Sumbanese follow Marapu, a traditional belief centred on ancestors, and you will see it in traditional villages, high-roofed clan houses and megalithic stone tombs. Sumba is also known for ikat weaving. If you visit around February or March, you may catch Pasola, the ritual horseback festival usually held in West Sumba.

Visit villages with a local guide, ask before taking photos and dress modestly away from the beach.

The Head of Tennis program

Eco Beach City has a Head of program for each discipline, and tennis is one of them. The Head of Tennis is the link between Sumba and the tennis players of one country: clubs, coaches, doubles partners and friends who want somewhere new to play.

How it works, in short:

If you coach, run a club team or simply know many players who would enjoy a tennis week by the sea, the page explains the details. You can also see every discipline on the Head of page.
